On the future of EnduranceLog

First let me say that I am really happy with the recent rise in interest in EnduranceLog as a component for Joomla 1.5. You have been very patienly trying to get a working version out of me and to put your minds at ease, I am working on a 1.5-with-legacy-option version of the current 0.4rc4 component.

As I've indicated before though, this is not just a matter of a few cosmetic changes.  This is due both to the legacy option's very limited backwards compatibility and the components state of disarray.  As of now I think I have the backend finished but there still remains some work to be done on the front end.  Hopefully I will be able to finish that up this weekend.

I intend to release the 1.5-legacy component as soon as I have finished the changes, but be forewarned, the first version will be practically untested and as such should only be used for testing purposes. I'm sure there will be unforeseen problems that will crop up so better be safe than sorry.

I will welcome any error reports submitted either through the forum or directly to me.  Please try to be as specific as you can so that I have a greater chance at reproducing the error and see what can be done to fix it.

Once the 1.5legacy version is stable I will halt all developments of the current EnduranceLog and focus on a total re-write of the component. There will be changes in the underlying database structure and hence a break in the code.  I shall do my very best to write some sort of migration tool for those that want to move their data over to the new component.  It will install as a seperate component, with its own database tables and so you should be able to test it out without destroying anything from the older version.

This new version of EnduranceLog will probably not be as modifiable as the current version in terms of other types of sports besides those that have time and distance as their main focus.  I shall try to keep weights in there as well, but anything beyond those three is improbable to be implemented in the foreseeable future.

I hope this helps you in deciding whether EnduranceLog is the right component for you in the future.
